My Students

Imagine, for a moment, that you could not read. Now, imagine that you can read, but you can not recall or internalize the information. Finally, imagine hearing information, but not being able to use it effectively. These aspects of life we take for granted are the everyday struggles of my students.

My students are wonderful children.

Unfortunately, they have a lot of circumstances going against them. Most come from homes where what they are learning is not reinforced outside of school. Whether it be due to a language barrier (many of my students' families do not speak English), or due to lack of parent involvement, the majority of their learning happens in the few short hours per day they are in school. On top of these barriers, my students have been diagnosed with expressive and/or receptive language delays as well as delays in phonemic and phonological awareness skills. They have difficulty with reading and listening comprehension, writing and literacy... the very foundations of a successful education.

My Project

In these unprecedented times, we are navigating education in an entirely novel way. Speech and language therapy within the schools has changed dramatically as well. Teletherapy will be the norm for the foreseeable future. In adjusting to this new normal, it is particularly important to have the reliable technology necessary to make virtual speech and language therapy as seamless as possible. By receiving this computer, I will be better equipped to work with my speech and language students to target their goals for therapy. I will be working with my students virtually both while they are in school and when they are at home. Activities that are executed during speech and language teletherapy include, but are not limited to: targeting articulation of target sounds, reading comprehension, listening comprehension, written language development, and phonemic and phonological awareness. Having executed teletherapy in the spring, I know all too well how important efficient technology is needed for successful therapy. This computer will provide me with the ability to share materials I am utilizing between devices, allow me to create therapeutic materials that I can use in person and virtually, and create the most dynamic, engaging and enjoyable teletherapy experience possible for my students.
