Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I teach tenth grade in an urban high school in a low-income district. My students are creative, hard-working, and dedicated learners who come from diverse backgrounds. I teach four classes which are made up of a wide variety of students. My classes include ESL students as well as students with learning disabilities and behavioral and emotional disorders.

My students benefit from lessons taught using a wide variety of formats, including audio and visual supports as well as hands-on tasks, to cater to the differing learning styles in the classroom.

I teach a course called Design for Life, which is focused on social and emotional learning as well as college and career readiness. We don't have textbooks, so my lessons need to be innovative and engaging at all times.

I enjoy doing hands-on projects with my students and believe that they benefit from activities that allow them to use a variety of skills. Projects that combine reading, writing, and the arts have been a successful way to engage my students.

My Project

I am planning a community quilt project for all the tenth graders in my school as a way for them to explore their individual identities and how they fit into a larger community.

The theme of this community quilt is “Creating A Better Future Together.” In lessons leading up to the final product, students will discover the ways we can create a better future.

They will consider what actions they can take to achieve wellness (physically, mentally, and socially) in their own lives, and think about how they can broaden that goal to work together in developing a peaceful, thriving community. We will discuss how an individual's actions can have a ripple effect on those around them.

Through different readings, we will study the history of quilting and examine its importance in social structures in different cultures. We will discuss how quilting brings people together and how each square of a quilt plays an essential part in creating the whole.

Each student will use art supplies to create a paper quilt square that connects to the theme. We will then create a large quilt made up of all their squares. We will laminate each square using the laminating paper to preserve their work. We will attach their squares together using the Clipco Book Rings. Each student will also write an essay about their square and how it connects to the larger theme.

Through the process of making the quilt, everyone can practice working together as a community while learning new art and life skills that promote lifelong learning. We will also create an artifact that will hang in the school, and it will help remind the students of the community they are and the ways in which they can work towards a better future, both individually and collectively.
