Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

"When you lose you get up, you make it better, you try again" Serena Williams. Half the battle for some students is learning to persevere despite adversity, learning to try again when something is hard, and doing so with a smile on their face. Learning a new sport like tennis can change that!

I teach in a mid-sized school about 10 miles outside of the city center of Los Angeles.

The neighborhood is primarily Latino, with most families living in poverty. Students rarely play outdoors and get exercise because of the densely packed apartment buildings and lack of yard space. My classroom has 24 students: 13 second graders and 11 third graders. All students are eligible for the free breakfast and lunch program offered by the school district. Over half of the students also stay after school in the Woodcraft Rangers after school program, which provides free babysitting, activities, and a nutritious snack. Although my students face challenges, they are hard workers and love to learn.

My Project

I would love for my students to learn a new sport such as tennis. Students in this area are rarely exposed to sports other than soccer or football (and this is mainly boys, not girls). My school is severely lacking in proper PE equipment. I think that learning a new sport during PE would help with hand-eye coordination, physical fitness, and overall self esteem. I envision teaching in small groups during PE.

This project will change students' lives for the better by exposing them to a brand new sport.

Even when students are academically prepared and make it to college, they are often lacking in the social experiences that help them relate to their more affluent peers. By learning to play tennis, not only will they have fun now, they can carry this skill into their adult lives. This cultural capital will help them in all aspects of college and career.
