Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

New country, new language, new home, new school, new friends, same sport. I am a high school physical education teacher for recent immigrants in New York City.

In September I was given the unique opportunity to develop a physical education program from the ground up. The only challenge, my students do not speak English and are all from different regions of the world! As a physical education teacher I have a unique ability to break down the language and cultural barriers through sports, as opposed to ESL and Social Studies Class. A number of my students, both male and female, have expressed an interest in tennis. I think this is a great opportunity to help the students break through the culture barriers, help them feel more comfortable in a new country, as well as develop their language abilities outside of the classroom but in a structured environment. It is also a way to help them feel a connection to the school and become involved in a healthy activity that will encourage growth and development, not only physically, but socially as well.

To start, I need tennis rackets and special indoor foam tennis balls to get the program rolling over the winter. With just these basic supplies I will be able to start the program inside during the cold New York winters, and grow the interest and skill level of my students as well. I will be using a volleyball net for now, but hope to be able to purchase a net specifically designed for tennis in the future.

With your help we can make these recent immigrants feel a little less homesick, as well as help them connect with their fellow classmates through a common interest. This gift will also give the students a chance to become involved in a healthy after school activity and improve their ability to learn the English language
