My Students

I am a Speech Therapist working for a NYC Public School located in Brooklyn, NY. Currently I am working from home providing tele therapy for children in grades Kindergarten, 1st, 4th and 5th. My school kids are smart, funny, curious ,creative and are all diagnosed with ASD, Autism Spectrum Disorder. They are part of an incredible program for children with ASD who are in an ICT classroom with two teachers specially trained to provide for the needs of these amazing kids. I am their Speech Therapist who provides them with activities to guide them with their social pragmatic skills. We engage in activities to create awareness on problem solving, collaboration, emotions, perspective taking and other social skills. When school is in our actual school building the kids would come to "Clubhouse" three to five days a week in groups where they would engage in hands on activities which promote the social skills mentioned. Working together in one room is ideal for us to target these skills. Working via video has proven to be a challenge for all of us .

My Project

Working from home, with no clear dates of when we will return to the school building, has proven to be overwhelming and has brought upon so many learning challenges as well as tech challenges. Providing therapy via video conferencing has made me research new ways to provide collaborative projects via the screen to my kids to help them work on their social pragmatic skills. Screen sharing work is not possible on some platforms or devices issued by the DOE. Having an updated computer and additional monitor will help me to be able to see the students while presenting them with our 'project' on the other. A headset helps to alleviate the echo which is caused by all the different locations we sign on from, which in turn help my kids to focus better.
