Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

With all the academic demands of students in this generation, there is little time for fostering the love of writing about their lives and the benefits of growing personally through journal writing. Yet this generation, perhaps more than any other generation before, would benefit from all the emotional awareness, the stress relief and the self-confidence this activity produces. My classrooms of heterogenous learners, students with disabilities, English Language Learners, and diverse personalities are the perfect place for adolescents to learn and practice the advantages of taking pen to paper about themselves.

With these writing resources, my students will be excited to start their journaling lives.

The covers of the notebooks are blank, which will allow them to make their journals their own by decorating them with artwork, images, words, etc. The smaller size of the journals also makes them feel a little more personal to them. The felt tip pens are perfect motivators for writing - it's a proven trick I've used for years! The colored pencils are for the days they feel maybe a drawing would help them express their thoughts, as well. The pencil sharpener is to keep those pencils sharp and ready for use. And the book ends will help us to display the journals proudly yet discretely on classroom bookshelves.

Allowing middle school students the opportunity to write their ideas freely encourages a greater sense of self-awareness. This is such a crucial time for them to learn how to gain control of their emotions and set goals that will bring them into the next chapter of their lives. These journals will help them do all of this and so much more.
