Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My classroom is a ninth grade English class comprised of 15 male students with reading levels ranging from grade level three to reading grade level ten. The school in which the classroom is located is in a high needs urban area where academic success is difficult.

My ninth grade self contained special education class is extremely motivated to graduate from high school. Many students within the group have expressed interest in moving to a less restrictive environment. Students in this class, although receiving modifications, desire a good challenge. These students have just finished reading Homer's The Odyssey. The young group of boys are interested in adventure outside of their urban neighborhoods. Many of the students do not have access to Internet or even a TV at home and a couple even live in group homes. Many times, the solace that students find is burying themselves in a book that engages them and that they are able to read. The school is experiencing extreme budgets cuts and is in jeopardy of being closed. My students do not have engaging books for young teenage boys that they are able to read.

If provided with the proper materials my students will read. Not only will they read but they will enjoy reading. Materials need to be scaffolded so that all students are able to do the work and are included in classroom activities.

You be the difference for my students. The students in this class need to feel that they can read, despite their reading level or ability. If students feel achievement, they are more likely to persevere in the future.
