My Students

My students live in a very rural town in Arkansas. The majority of my students are on free or reduced lunches. My students love to read, but extra money for books is very limited in the family home. Many of my students are being raised by grandparents who live on a fixed income, so books in the home are not an option.

My students always amaze me with their eagerness to learn.

During a novel discussion, my students love to speak their minds. Sometimes, a student will make such a profound statement about the novel, I have to do a little dance and tell them what an awesome student he/she is.

In order for my students to excel in reading, I need classroom books.

My Project

Skeleton Creek, a mystery book with an exciting new storytelling format will have teens riveted! Reluctant teen readers will become involved in the story, plus the addition of videos will be an awesome incentive for reading. My students will incorporate reading the book and watching video clips in a mystery based off real life incidents. In a world flooded with technology, I realize my students need to be involved and this book fills those requirements.

Skeleton Creek, written by Patrick Carmen, allows students the unique experience of alternating between books and videos.

What teen wouldn't want to read this book? The students get to read the book, watch the videos, and then solve the mystery!

This book is written for 21st century teen readers. It is interactive, involves technology, and is based on real life. As a teacher, I believe this is a must for teen readers who struggle to stay engaged with a book.
