My Students

In our high performing community, our students "do school," and care greatly about getting good grades, but often miss out on meaningful learning in the process. More specifically, many of them have lost their love of reading. They view reading as a boring chore, one that they do begrudgingly, or even worse, don't do at all.

My students crave choice and independence in their learning.

I believe they need more choice in what they read and study, to entice them to be lifelong readers and learners. Also, as in any classroom, I have a huge range of reading abilities. By giving them a choice, I can better differentiate instruction and use reading conferences to make sure each student has a book that works for him or her.

My Project

I believe students will read more if they are given choice in what they read. My classroom library has been steadily growing over the past few years, but I'm always looking to add more of the newest and most enticing young adult and adult titles. This grant will help build my classroom library, by adding more high-interest texts in some of the genres my students read most, like realistic fiction, mystery/suspense, and memoir. This will, in turn, entice more students to read, especially my more reluctant readers.

These books will allow students to build their own content and make reading more exciting for them.

Once the students are interested in reading and are confident in their increasing abilities, then they can challenge themselves to increase the text complexity and to read more each week. I believe we need to trust these young adults more. We need to trust them to take responsibility for their own learning so that they have more of a stake in their learning outcomes. This will empower them to keep reading beyond the four walls of my classroom.
