Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

About My Students

Students from a Southern California High School Book Club desire to learn more about writing and poetry and want to create their own book. Club President Yasmine, Gr 10, loves to write and draw and has inspired other club members to get involved. This group of kids are involved in ROTC, AVID, & book club and are looking toward their future. They have had limited exposure to culture, the arts or reading for pleasure. We are a Title 1 school that has a large population of foster youth, ESL learners and at-risk students. Our free and reduced lunch students number 90%. The library collection is aged, and the average copyright date is 1992. Getting our students hyped about reading is difficult with dusty, out of date or missing materials.

The objective for funding these books and supplies is to introduce students in grades 9-12 various skills they can use both to creatively express themselves and to deepen their understanding and appreciation of poetry, creative writing and artwork created by others. Students will develop and hone their writing skills and artistry in an environment that is calm, welcoming and supportive. The donations to this project will help improve students knowledge as they employ a wide range of strategies, using different writing process elements appropriately for communicating with different audiences. Students will improve their writing and reading skills while crafting something meaningful.

In Their Own Words

Yasmine says, "We want to show other people that we can have fun, write books and read too! The book club can have fun while we are writing stories, poems, and drawing to make a book that will be kept with the yearbooks and scrapbooks in the library." Coby adds, " When we accomplish book writing, we will learn new words." Imelda thinks that "Creating a book is a good way to let others know about the club and get them interested in reading and writing." Marilyn says that, "writing and drawing is a good way to be able to express yourself."

As President of the book club I will get the Vice President, Jacqueline to create flyers advertising our Read, Write and Draw! challenge and we will post them on campus. The members of the book club and new recruits can get an idea of how to write our own books as future writers and artists. We will learn how to be leaders by producing a book on our own.

This is an important project because the handmade books will represent our school and teach us leadership skills. Making the books will also raise awareness of the MVHS book club and teach us to be future artist and writers in a most professional manner. Anyone who is interested, can express themselves through their writing and art. Our club does not have any requirements like GPA etc. Everyone is welcome! We want to promote our club and show that reading and writing can be fun and not nerdy!
