Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

The most important teachers a child has are their parents. As young teenage parents, my students rise to the challenge of juggling school, raising a family, and working. However, sometimes finding the time to create and share family learning experiences is difficult.

As determined and nurturing young men and women, who attend a day-time high school that offers a teen parenting program with on-site child care, they pursue to actualize their dreams of becoming high school graduates that are college bound.

My students persevere to rise above what families, friends, and society sometimes sees as failures for having children at a young age. This determination is demonstrated from their participation in school and the passion they have for their children. The program enrollment is 30 teen parents that range from pregnant mothers and/or expectant fathers to students with children from infants to toddlers. The teen parents/students attend school five days a week. And, one reason they attend school is because we offer certified day care services. This allows the students to attend school reassured their children are well taken care of.

My Project

The resources requested for the students are meant to be used during their Parenting class where students will use the musical instruments, CDs and parachutes to have interactive play time. The books will promote early literacy for parents and children. Parent and Child Time is structured lessons to engage families in interactive play, literacy, and wellness. By providing the students with the materials and time to play with their children, we believe this enhances the overall family dynamics. The students will learn strategies to develop literacy in the home, conduct share readings with their children, foster musical appreciation, and create video story books to share with their children. The resources will be used to create a Family Literacy/PACT program within the school and broader community.

The impact of the resources is something that can be measured not only by the success of the student, but also by the foundation building of their children. This initial step is to document how PACT and Family Literacy programs improve the literacy of students, their children, and, the building of early literacy to prepare the next generation for a literate future.
