This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

This MacBook is for 7th and 8th grade students who produce morning announcements seen by our entire K-8 population. That's about 900 students.

92% of the students at our school come from households with below-average income.

The kids tend to be first-generation Americans whose parents have recently arrived in the U.S. from the Caribbean or from Central or South America. We do not have an affluent PTA that could help us purchase resources for our media center.

My Project

We have a fantastic team of 7th and 8th graders who produce videos for the morning announcements. They have improvised a green screen in one of our storage cupboards, where they film sketches, and also they visit classrooms to film segments with younger kids. All the filming is done on their phones. Then, they put everything together using iMovie. Their videos are fast-paced and full of creative humor, a joy to watch but difficult to edit.

Our young film editors could learn better and faster if they had access to another computer with iMovie.

Currently, when the time comes to edit together all the video clips, we get a bit of a bottleneck... not good, when you have to produce one announcements show every day. That is why we would dearly love to acquire the MacBook featured in this project.

We should begin the project with a head start! We have $300 to spend, contributed from an anonymous donor, and a matching offer is coming up very shortly, so that should effectively cut the cost of the project in half.
