This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My 7th and 8th grade students are an energetic bunch of teens who love to socialize and have fun. Our bustling middle school is located in a high-poverty, working-class neighborhood. More than half of our student body receives free or reduced-price lunch and speaks English as a second language.
You wouldn't know it from looking at them, but many have already experienced trauma or loss in their young lives.
After school, some kids go home to babysit younger siblings while others attend after-school care until 5 or 6 pm. For young teens, all of this responsibility at home can result in extra exuberance while at school. Although some of them have distractions that prevent them from focusing on academics, the majority of our students are aspiring scholars who are focused on going to college!
My Project
My middle school Home Economics students have learned how to hand sew, use a sewing machine, make a variety of different foods, and even balance a checkbook. I'd like to end our Year 1 revival of Home Ec by teaching students how to use our Silhouette cutting machine to design t-shirts to commemorate the first year of our program. In order to create their shirts, students will need to measure, design, and cut a vinyl transfer to fit the space. We will print out a design on the vinyl using our Silhouette, which is why we need new cutting mats and replacement blades. The Xacto knife will help them weed and clean up their paper design using the LED Lightbox Tracer before applying it to their new t-shirts using the Cricut Easy Press. They will need to measure both the negative space on their shirt and their final designs in order to calculate the true center before application. There's nothing like applying mathematics concepts to real-life situations to get them thinking critically.
These student-made t-shirts would not only be wonderful mementos of our first year of Home Economics, but also a treasured and powerful reminder of the power of their design creativity and mathematics power!
