My Project

The aim of this project is to assist in implementing a practice element of using teddy bears (stuffed animals) in the classroom. As a Kindergarten teacher, I serve as a catalyst for these toys to become instruments for teaching through play with very young children (ages 4-5 years old). The bears act as transitional objects which will provide comfort and stability in the development of social-emotional regulation and pro-social behaviors. This project explores the methodology of teddy bears in the classroom designed by Leslie Koplow (2008) and I am loosely adapting it to my Kindergarten classroom. I postulate that through implementation of this intervention which emphasizes self-regulation and pro-social competencies it would enable and promote cognitive development through emergent and explicit literacy practices while oral language development would increase my students’ social competence and self-regulatory skills therefore fostering key dimensions in school readiness and beyond.
