This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
My students live in a high poverty and high crime neighborhood. Many live in a single parent or grandparent household where that parent/grandparent works to provide for the family on a tight budget that supplies the necessities. They attend a K-8 elementary school in a tough neighborhood. The students are in sixth grade, which is a critical year for many of them, because they struggle with wanting to be independent and needing guidance. As if this struggle was not enough to deal with they are exposed to the reality of poverty and crime on a daily basis. They want to succeed and to compete on a level playing field with their peers. The needs are great but they are willing to work hard.
Our administrator has given the school a new lease on life, she believes in them and as a result they believe in themselves.
But we need help to make our dreams a reality.
My Project
Most school students interact with technology on a daily basis but my students do not have as much access due to a lack of computers or internet access at home. Todays technology literate world will not wait for them to catch up therefore we need to make it happen today. My students need these 10 Chromebooks to increase writing and literacy proficiency as well as their desire to learn and use technology.
John Dewey said "if we teach today as we taught yesterday, we rob our children of tomorrow." We cannot afford to rob our children of tomorrow, we need to prepare them for the world and technology is an integral part of this education.
The Chromebooks will allow students to utilize the online components of our curriculum as well as the opportunity to explore and write and learn. To satisfy their thirst for the unknown. All of this will help them to become more proficient readers, writers, and citizens.
Nearly all students from low‑income households
