My Students

No matter what their reading level, many students find reading less entertaining than computers, video games, and music. These students want to hear everything and have the answers at the tip of their fingers.

Any additional opportunity to read is an additional opportunity to learn new words, practice reading and research strategies, and strengthen skills learned in the classroom.

My 9th grade students read anywhere from a 2nd grade to a college reading level. Some students have access to various types of technology, while others do well to have breakfast each morning. Some students are strongly motivated to succeed in high school and pursue college, while others do well to feel motivated to do well in 9th grade English. All students could use the extra motivation to read on a more regular basis.

My Project

In a culture where digital reigns, the classrooms of today are quickly falling behind. We have our students reading from their textbooks and working on worksheets, rarely getting them onto computers or allowing them to use their iPods and iPhones (or whatever other smart technology they have) to read or complete research; however, not every student has access to this technology. The MP3 players I am requesting will provide all my students access to various audio books and educational music to help them complete assignments in my class- analyzing music, learning new words, or just finishing their independent book projects. The tablets will be used for individual and group research, educational games, and as additional eReaders for my classroom.

Having multiple types of technology in my classroom will provide my students with an additional motivator for reading and completing their work.

In this day and age, we need to help these students step up to the 21st century, and I know this will encourage them along the way.
