Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I teach a self-contained special education class for 6th and 7th graders. My students are typically 3-4 years behind their academic grade level. This is especially true when it comes to writing.

Nothing is more difficult for these kids than to put pen to paper. They have difficulty with spelling, grammar, editing, and overall expression and organization. The only time I see my students inspired to write is with the use of a computer. However, because my students have difficulty with reading as well as writing, typical word processing software does not address their learning needs. They can not read the spell check suggestions, and there is no auditory feedback.

My students need assistive technology software for writing. WordQ Software is specially designed for my population of students. It has word prediction capabilities, making it faster and easier for the writer to create a complete sentence. It also has auditory response for the user. It can read back a single letter, a word, sentence, paragraph, or entire document so that students can listen to check their work. When it does spell check, it reads aloud the spelling choices and even differentiates words that sound the same.

This project will address my class’ need to overcome the fear and obstacles of writing. It will also inadvertently increase their computer fluency as they learn to master the software program. My goal is for my students to be excited to write and to improve the quality of their final product. I would love to incorporate this technology into my classroom in order to motivate my students to overcome their writing disabilities.
