My Students

I teach music in four public elementary schools in Los Angeles. I use a rock band curriculum at two of my schools where students learn guitar, bass, keyboard, drums and sing. I want my kids to be able to play the music they love and write music to express their ideas and feelings

I have students that are non-native English speakers, students that have learning disabilities, students that are highly gifted, and students that are really motivated - and some not so much.

Some can get easily frustrated when given a challenging task such as playing the guitar - so I scaffold my instruction so students can have choices of how to go about playing a song. I try my best to support each individual student by keeping track of their progress and giving more support to those who need it. Having a class of 35 students is very challenging, especially when we have to navigate many things simultaneously, like which finger/fret/string to use, which strings to strum, what rhythm pattern we're using, etc.

My Project

I will use the document reader to demonstrate and visually show all 35 students how my left hand has to look in order to play a chord successfully. Instead of students guessing because they are sitting in the fourth row of seats and can't see as well as students in the first row, I can zoom in with the document reader to what my left hand is doing and the image is portrayed on the screen for all to see.

Students won't reach levels of frustration as easily because they can visually see what I am asking them to do. They will play with greater confidence, because they can see what my hand is doing to create the chord.
