This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I teach a Functional Life Skills classroom. The students in my classroom range from age 5-9 years old, Kindergarten through third grade. My students are my babies and they can do extraordinary things when given the opportunity!

My students all have disabilities and those disabilities range from high-functioning Autism to low-functioning Autism, Down Syndrome, Intellectual Disabilities, and Cerebral Palsy.

They all have severe behavior, communication, and academic needs. In fact, my classroom is considered to be one of the most difficult classes within my school district, in terms of behavior challenges.

My Project

I am asking for one iPad and protective case to help prolong the iPad lifespan for as long as possible. My students will use the iPad to help facilitate independence in small group work stations. Many of the students in my classroom require more individualized attention, so it would be good to have an iPad that one student can access educational content on independently so that another student is able to get individualized and specific attention. Then, we can rotate that iPad around the group. This also helps to facilitate sharing, which is a concept that my students have a difficult time understanding.

I will use the iPad to create communication aids and social stories to improve student behavior.

In my class, all of my students are either non-verbal or have limited communication/language skills. To overcome this, we use of communication visual pictures. I would use the iPad to take visuals of familiar objects, in addition to the students participating in appropriate behaviors, in order to teach valuable social skills.
