My Students

Do you remember what it was like when you first peered in to a drop of pond water with microscope and discovered a hidden world with your very eyes? Do you remember when you first learned about the stars of the wondrous infinite universe? I do. Science isn’t an interest of mine it is a passion.

All my students are eligible for special education services.

The classroom has students with autism, specific learning disabilities, and vision and hearing impairments. They attend a Title 1 school in California. My students come from a lower socioeconomic class, but they have dreams of attending college. Many of them are English language learners and are several grade levels behind in reading and writing. Last year, we exited two of our students back to general education curriculum. This year, I hope it is three or more students. With the right amount of skills, they can overcome their challenges and meet the expectations of the general education curriculum. Most of my students don't have Internet access at home or a working computer. They come every day eager to learn and grow. Budget cuts have hit our school hard and the students have suffered the most. It is difficult to teach lessons in the computer age without any computers.

My Project

I have found that many of my students are very visual thinkers and greatly enjoy art. I have been trying to find new and simple ways to incorporate both art projects and technology in my class that makes learning more meaningful for my students. We will use the tablet for research projects, 3-D Modeling, interactive, research-based simulations, writing college style papers, word processing software (spelling/reading), databases and spreadsheets, and to teach the ethical use of computers and software. We will also learn how to network with other students, draw and graph information, demonstrate videos, take virtual tours of museums, and use Dropbox, Witty Comics, Photovisi, Kahn Acadamy, and Google Earth. Putting a computer into a child's hands will completely change that child's life. The impact of such an act of charity is incalculable. I hate having to beg strangers for money, but this is the reality of public education. This is why we are asking for your help.

My students have already have two strikes against them; they come from disadvantaged homes and they have a disability.

I'm desperately trying not to have them leave school with the third strike of being technologically illiterate. My students will learn how to access the Internet to do research for projects. Math and language arts games will improve the skills closer to their non-disabled peers.
