My Students

Help bring the computer age to my classroom. It's unbelievable that a classroom in 2013 only has one working computer, but this is the challenge my students face everyday. How can I prepare my students for the 21st century when we lack the technology in class? However, with your help we can overcome this challenge.

All my students are eligible for special education services.

The classroom has students with autism, specific learning disabilities, vision and hearing impairments. They attend a Title I school in California. My students come from a lower socioeconomic class but they have dreams of attending college. Many of them are English language learners and are several grade levels behind in reading and writing. Most of my students don't have Internet access at home or a working computer. They come every day eager to learn and grow. Budget cuts have hit our school hard and the students have suffered the most. We have only one computer in the classroom and it is difficult to teach lessons in the computer age without any computers.

My Project

Tablet computers have revolutionized classrooms across the country. These devices engage students and command their attention like no other piece of technology I have ever seen. I don't know the reason for their obsessive interest, all I know is it can be used to keep them interested in learning. My students need the 21st century skills to be successful in school and in life. When a 11 year kid doesn't even know how to turn on a computer of search the Internet for information, I feel we have failed them as a country. My students have already have two strikes against them. They come from disadvantaged homes and they have a disability. I'm desperately trying not have them leave school with the third strike of being technologically illiterate. With Kindles and headphones, my students will learn how to access the Internet to do research for projects. Math and language arts games will improve the skills closer to their non-disabled peers. My students will learn how to access website to get help with their homework.

Putting a computer into a child's hands will completely change that child's life.

The impact such an act of charity is incalculable. I would love to have a classroom full of students being able to access the many resources the Internet has to offer. I would love to have a classroom that is equipped to give student the education they deserve but I do not. This is why we are asking for your help. These students still live in the past where information was hard to find and the world seemed distant
