My Students

Our students are mostly from low-income homes in a high poverty neighborhood in the heart of Miami. Most of the students' families are Haitian immigrants and are struggling financially to provide for their basic needs. English is their second language and reading comprehension is a constant challenge for our students. These students have very little at home to help them and look forward to coming to school every day to learn. 100% of our students are either on free or reduced lunch.

Foundation is KEY!

Students in the primary grade levels, Kindergarten - 2nd grade are the very foundation of education! Our students are eager to learn and can benefit from tools that will help them to sound out words and learn to read and comprehend better. As the Instructional Reading Coach in a Title 1 school, I can facilitate this process and bring this love of reading and learning into the classroom.

My Project

The Little Scholartm Tablets will allow students to work in groups and learn phonics, vocabulary and reading comprehension skills without depending solely on the teacher. The Sentence Building set will help students build sentences independently in centers. The Word Fun Book and Grammar Tales sets will help students build grammar skills to apply to writing.

Students will be captivated and actively engaged in independent learning activities using these Hot Dot Pens and Interactive Tablets.

Imagine having a pen that has a speaker inside that helps you to hear the sounds of letters and words and Tablets that are user friendly filled with learning games! Wow, What a way to engage students, especially in the primary grades!! The Phonics Apps on the Little Scholar Tablets will show students how to blend sounds to make words, how to read sentences and correct grammar, which will improve their reading comprehension and writing skills. The Hot Dot Phonics sets will allow students to hear the sounds of the letters and words and help them to correct their mistakes while reading. These are powerful learning tools that will enhance the way students learn.

These materials will integrate technology with reading in fifteen of our Primary K-2 classes, and will impact 325 students. These tools will greatly assist the teachers in the classes to reach all the students who are in need of foundation skills in phonics. The foundation will certainly be set in the primary grades and will help develop fluent readers to advance to the next grade.
