"Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world" -Nelson Mandela Having 20 plus students rotating between 4 computers makes it difficult to create this powerful weapon called Education. My students need 9 Kindle Tablets and 10 sets of headphones to create and design projects to make them competitive in the world despite coming from a poverty stricken area. By the end of the year, my students will be well on their way to real world success.
Who are my students?
My students are the students who come to school each and every day with the love of learning on their minds and a zest for achieving in their hearts. Despite having financial hardships and being a school with 100 percent free lunch, our students had the highest attendance in the district this school year. Now, that is saying something because our school district has over 40,000 students and yet my school was number 1 in attendance. I start the school day by saying, "When I teach you learn!" and the students reply by saying "Just like that!" After the third time this is chanted, the students reply by saying, "We're ready to learn all these facts." This chant gets our students focused and engaged in learning. They come to us with every intention on being the best they can be despite all of their challenges that are out of their control.
A year and a half ago, ex-basketball player Shaquille O'Neal spoke at and delivered holiday toys to all of the students at our school. I instantly thought of how cool it would be if we had a student record the event from their perspective. I borrowed 2 iPads, one from a friend and one from my wife, to allow the students to record the event and to narrate what happened. To make a long story short, this project was a success. Teachers, parents, administrators, and students alike were really excited about seeing and hearing what the students recorded. The only instructions I gave students were to emulate what they would see a news reporter do. Many wondered why I chose those 2 students because they were not my best students. In fact, that was the reason why I chose them. I wanted them to have a different image than what others had seen of them in the past. Students will learn that having an education can change your life in an instant. I want my students to have these life changing experiences.
Students who attend my school do not get the opportunity to travel to places outside of their own communities, let alone out of town.
With this technology, students will be able to virtually travel the world. With most things moving to touchscreens and virtually reality, students will have experiences that they normally wouldn't have in their everyday lives. Students will be able to relate and be able to use trends and innovations that most people use in their daily lives.
