I am a technology teacher in an impoverished section of Queens, NY. I would very much like to host an evening for the parents and the community to see, touch and operate some tech equipment. The school has desktop and laptop computers. We also have a camcorder and an older digital camera. I would like to be able to display these pieces of equipment with the students(ages 7-11) doing the demo's and explaining how the equipment works. We are lacking in funds to purchase two pda handheld devices which we would also like to showcase. We want to show the parents and the community a comparison between a large monitor for a desktop computer, a laptop monitor and the screen of a pda device, in which all of these can perform the same function. I know this will boost the self esteem of the students that are involved. We will do research on the different devices to be displayed. I will also role play with the students so they will be comfortable speaking in front of adults. We plan to video tape a couple of the students explanations and have it playing during the event. This will involve using a television and vcr, which is also related. This will be a schoolwide event and we hope to have it on a night when the parents association is having a meeting. I also expect to involve careers. I want the students that are the demonstrators to dress up like one of the career people that might use this device. For example, business people, teachers, doctors, etc. I think this will be a great way to show off our technolgy and to have the students become the teachers for one evening. We will also continue to use the pda devices within the classroom as word processors for the students working portfolios.
