Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

Our students want to learn more about the ecology of New York City and are working towards completing independent research projects. Our school is an environmental high school with a young research program. I am trying to strengthen this research program and support our students entrance to our local science fair competition. I work with the sophomore class on developing projects related to the urban environment. Skills obtained in my course include many research techniques that will serve our students in their futures including reading primary literature, sampling methods, developing hypotheses and statistical analysis.

We are developing an urban environmental research program and we need help to analyze student data. Our class is working on studying the ecology of an urban park looking at the birds, insects, reptiles, vegetation, wildlife and water quality. In order to complete their projects and support the development of their research skills we need to have access to a powerful computer they can use for analysis. Students are also not allowed to save to computers which makes it very difficult for our students to maintain their work.

Once students complete their field work, they must be in the classroom organizing and analyzing their data. Students are learning how to use excel in order to graphically represent their data. It would be wonderful to provide our students access to computers and software that will help them in their high school and college career. Learning how to use both PC and Mac operating systems and software is essential to their future success. In addition, so much data is collected and papers written and there is no common space to save their work. Having an external hard drive where students will know their work is located will help keep them organized and is another important skill that will serve them for years to come.

With your help these students will be supported as they continue to explore the opportunities for high school research. Their 21st century skill set will be expanded by learning how to operate new technology and analyze data.
