My Students

Could you imagine taking notes from a chalkboard in the 21st century? Or even having your teacher use their drawing "skills" to try and help you get a better understanding of a difficult concept? Hopefully, this will no longer be the reality of my students.

My students truly need you to make a difference in their overall classroom experience.

Deep in Texas, I have the esteemed privilege of teaching over 150 college-bound students. Although many of them are freshmen in high school, college is on the forefront of their minds. The reality is that many of them may not have the opportunity to attend college due to the lack of resources at our school that are necessary to attain a quality education. I work at a Title I school, where at least 95% of the students are considered "at-risk" of being unsuccessful and receive free or reduced school lunch. Being raised in poverty is difficult enough for my students. They come to school to escape the harsh realities of their home lives. But it is difficult for them to rid their minds of their unfortunate situations because they realize, at our school, we do not have access to many things. Sadly enough, this often leads to a decrease in motivation.

My Project

I teach Biology to a group of students that are accustomed to not having access to the best resources for their varying needs. With a high population of "English Language Learners" and students with "Special Needs", it can sometimes be a huge challenge to communicate the facets of science by simply writing words and drawing pictures on a chalkboard. With an LCD projector in my classroom I will be able to use visuals such as video animations explaining biological processes and pictures to give my students a better understanding of the structures studied in a life science course. Not only that, but my students will also have access to Microsoft PowerPoint, which will be used to present the notes for each unit as well as to help them create their own presentations to be delivered in front of their peers. Truthfully the possibilities are endless and each of them can will take all my students to the next level both academically and mentally.

My students deserve to have the opportunity to be as successful as humanly possible.

Without certain tools, they will be limited to the amounts of success they can actually reach. If my students could just be shown that the resources are out there and that it is up to each individual to go out and find them, their drive to fight for a quality education will increase. I am certain that with the support of this project they will see that and a fuss will be sparked in each and every one of them.
