This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
Our elementary school is located in SE Washington, DC, where 97 percent of all students qualify for free or reduced-price lunch and free breakfast; and 25 percent of all students receive special education services. In my general education kindergarten classroom, all students with or without Individual Educational Plans (IEPs) are provided a positive learning environment that addresses both their academic and social emotional needs as well as embrace their strengths; while giving them a sense of belonging.
Most of these students have academic challenges in either reading and/or mathematics or have behavioral challenges; and will benefit tremendously from additional technology in the classroom.
It should be noted, however, that all of my students are amazing, full of energy, and enthusiastic about learning! They come to school every day ready to learn something new, and have so much opportunity for growth and potential for excellence, if provided good, daily instruction with the appropriate resources!
All of my students come to school excited to learn; and filled with enthusiasm. Students enjoy learning new concepts; and the usage of technology often reinforces these same concepts in a different modality. Therefore, our students frequently use computers in order to access our school district's interventions. With the addition of an Apple iPad, students' wait time can be cut while increasing their usage opportunities.
In addition, an iPad will allow my Special Needs students much desired mobility and flexibility to work elsewhere in the classroom with fewer distractions while accessing the general education curriculum.
My Special Needs students have various disabilities, often coming from different backgrounds or households, and frequently have specific individual needs based on both academic and social emotional learning. Specifically, these students will benefit tremendously from additional hands-on technology in our kindergarten classroom. However, all of my students will have access to this Apple iPad.
