Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I teach drama in a New York City public school. While I love my job and my students immensely, the limitations of resources, space and technology make it difficult to sustain a quality program. We have one laptop, but since the program has grown, we are in dire need of another computer to help us with a variety of projects. A laptop would help us in a multitude of ways. We produce a full length musical every year, and I have access to software that can help my students train and practice their vocal skills. The program changes the keys of the songs, adds in or eliminates different instruments, changes tempo...its benefits in my classroom are endless! Furthermore, I have lighting and set design software that I would love to utilize in my classroom. Set and lighting design would be a wonderful vocational option for several of my students who want to be involved in the arts but do not want to be an actor. I want to give them the tools necessary to succeed in the arts, and giving them the opportunity to work with professional software will undoubtedly engage and educate them. Having a computer in close proximity to my classes would be a great asset for us all, and would certainly enhance the stage design unit. Writing plays is a huge part in my classroom. My students also have monthly research projects that I assign. Researching roles, time periods, and past productions is a vital part of participating in drama, and so I feel that these projects are an integral part of my program. Most of my students do not have access to a computer at home and thus their research projects suffer from their lack of information. Having access to the internet in my classroom means that they can work in groups during class time or work with me during our lunch time. Moreover, I have planned playwriting and poetry units that require a great deal of writing, and I would love to provide them with a computer so that their work can be word processed and archived. I also am deeply committed to getting interested students into performing arts high schools. Having a computer in the classroom will ensure that I can help them write resumes, create professional portfolios, and print pictures of their work in the classroom. Finally, I am sure that our productions will benefit from having a computer to keep track of rehearsal schedules, budgets, script changes, and playbill advertisements. A computer that has a DVD burner would be a huge asset so that we can burn DVDs of their performances to cherish long after they graduate. Thank you so much for your time. I can't believe what a difference once computer can make!
