My Students

Technology is good. Technology in the hands of motivated, action-oriented students is powerful. There is a group of fifth grade students who fit this description. The only piece they are missing is the technology. Our students could do amazing things with an interactive whiteboard.

Help put this technology into our classroom and watch it transform and inspire the way our students learn.

My class is full of motivated, action-oriented students who place great importance in their education. They not only know how to use technology, but are learning to use it in ways to make a difference in our world. Our school is a high poverty public school that has been authorized as an International Baccalaureate primary year's program elementary school. Our school, students, families, and community support efforts in promoting 21st Century skills that will prepare our students for their future. This is evident because 2 out of the 3 fifth grade classrooms have brand new interactive white boards. Our classroom does not. This group of fifth graders deserves the same as their peers.

My Project

Imagine four fifth grade students working collaboratively on a project. The project...how do we advocate for the rights of underprivileged members in our community? After careful research, the students decide to raise awareness for families who cannot afford holiday gifts for their kids. These students conclude that if they can get people thinking about this issue, they will do something about it. First, they brainstorm ideas. Instead of having one writer, all four team members brainstorm ideas simultaneously on the interactive whiteboard. They research on the same board and find several local organizations that help with this very same issue. They decide to advertise for these organizations by creating posters to place around the community. They collaboratively design on the interactive whiteboard, pulling in text and images to create an appealing poster. Finally they take their action public. Students learn valuable, life-long lessons in cooperation, empathy, and action.

The type of project described above is common at our IB school.

Action is central to the IB philosophy. Our students will take action with or without technology. I hope you can see how much more effective they could be with it.
