Help Mr. Byrne

My Students

Many students do not have a concrete grasp of what temperature and energy levels really are. By investigating the temperature of various items in the IR spectra my students with be able to better understand temperature and how it relates to every day objects.

My school serves a very culturally diverse region of Washington state.

The students here a presented many challenges and struggles resulting from socio-economic diversity as well. They are bright and knowledge-hungry kids but usually do not the same educational advantages as other students.

My Project

The students in my class yearn for knowledge. They demonstrate this on a daily basis in my class. What I am looking for is a way to demonstrate to them, in a hands-on and practical manner, the simple principle of temperature and how it relates to molecular motion, a fundamental property of all matter. By the use of digital IR temperature probes, they will be able to directly measure the temperature of various items, hot and cold, and relate it to the movement of the atoms in the objects. The students will then relate this to temperature as it relates to metabolic rates in organisms, expansion and contraction of various materials, as well as application in the exploration and properties of distant stars.

By giving my students the opportunity to explore difficult concepts in a very hands-on manner they will be much more likely to fully comprehend the idea.

They will then be able to better apply that knowledge to the world around them.
