I teach 7th grade students in a large public middle school in a smaller city. Despite the size of the school, many of the students and families have known each other since kindergarten.
Our classroom is community of math learners, who relish the opportunity to investigate rich, mathematical challenges and find creative solutions to these problems.
In the course of a year, they are accelerating through both the 7th and 8th grade math curriculum while completing 3D design projects and other STEM enrichment activities.
The students in my class come from very diverse cultural and economic backgrounds. Approximately 40% of the students in my school live in poverty. This means that a large number of our students face the challenges of poverty, but not a large enough percentage for our school to receive additional funding to support their specialized needs. All of my students receive special education services for gifted students.
My Project
I am currently in the process of becoming a Google Certified Educator and learning about all the ways technology can be incorporated in the math classroom to provide modeling and visualizing capabilities, fluency practice, and both formative and summative assessments with instant feedback for students. We currently use technology to complete weekly fluency practice, practice concepts with programs that give the student instant feedback, and to complete STEM projects in 3D design and coding.
Given that the implementation of technology in classrooms is dependent upon that which is available, having a classroom set of Chromebooks would greatly benefit each of my students as I could provide instruction to them daily via this avenue.
Effectively implementing a technology-integrated approach should ultimately increase students' performance results on assessments and allow more content to be covered. In addition to supporting the core curriculum, as class set of Chromebooks will help our class complete more enrichment projects with a STEM focus.
