Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

We keep moving forward, opening new doors, and doing new things, because we're curious and curiosity keeps leading us down new paths.-Walt Disney

My school is a large Title I school with a diverse student population, serving high numbers of economically disadvantaged children.

We educate over 1200 kids from pre-k to 5th grade. Resources are limited, particularly with technology, as most classrooms do not have their own computer resources. I teach second graders English in a dual language program (Spanish-English), designed to teach kids fluency in both languages. My students are curious by nature. They explore, question, and wonder, and by doing so, learn. They are drawn to new things and they want to explore them. And while exploring, they are discovering. This inspires my students to become creative and independent learners.

My Project

My students will use the Exploration Center during their free time and during lessons to research topics of interest from class discussions and for projects, which will facilitate learning other subjects and enhancing skills that children inevitably use in other areas. Research skills are a very effective tool in the attainment of information in all subjects. I am requesting a tablet to create an Exploration Center in my classroom. With this technology, I will incorporate research skills into my students’ lessons in order to enhance learning. It will make complex concepts more accessible and enjoyable. It will facilitate independence and allow my students, a mix of primary English and Spanish speakers from various backgrounds, to learn about new subjects in a fun, easy way. The Exploration Center will allow me to teach the kids how to access on-line resources designed to enhance learning that they could use at home or at the library.

For many of my students, their only exposure to technology is at school.

Their faces light up when they have the opportunity to independently learn and satisfy their own curiosity. This enhancement will help my students become explorers, keep current with technology, and develop a lifelong love of learning.
