This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Currently, there are about 50 iPad applications that school counselors can use to enhance their school counseling programs and with an iPad, we can have access to all of those applications.

I am currently a school counselor in a middle school in the South Bronx.

It is a high needs school and many of my students have to overcome many hurdles even before entering the school building. They still make it school and do their best to learn, but sometimes this is very challenging. The socio-emotional component of their education is very important because the ability to regulate their emotions, express their needs and to have healthy self-esteems will allow my students to prosper academically. I also need a paper shredder so that I can discard confidential documents and not put any of my students' personal information at risk.

My Project

An iPad would allow my students to have access to applications such as Be Pink Powerful, Feel Electric, Unstuck and Emotionary just to name a few. Applications like these focus critical skills and concepts such as self-esteem building, expressing emotions, problem solving and self-regulation. Having access to such powerful tools would not only engage my students during their counseling sessions and help develop their socio-emotional skills, but this will also have a lasting impact on their academics and future.

My students need support and creative interventions.

Not having access to these applications is currently a disservice to them. Access to an iPad will help my students develop the social and emotional skills that are necessary in order to succeed in school and in life in general.
