Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

A day in my classroom is filled with groups of students (K - 6) trying to master a skill that the general education teacher has taught. In one period I have Kindergartners who need a Language Arts skill and then switch gears to meet with 4th graders trying to understand a math concept.

Most of my students are hardworking students who don't have access to the Internet at home, so they don't have the chance to access technology or play educational apps.

I am a Resource Specialist Teacher who finds one of the toughest parts of my job is to keep kids interested in learning. Most of my students have learning disabilities, so if I can bring in a high interest piece of technology, like the iPad then they will be excited about learning without even knowing they are learning. Lots of times, children with learning disabilities need extra opportunities to practice skills that need to be reinforced through high interest materials. So if they have that precious second chance with me in my classroom, it makes up for crowded classrooms with students overpowering one another to gain access to a lone computer. I am an advocate for these students, and while I may not have a child for the whole day I consider them mine. I am most concerned with their success academically and in life.

My Project

Some of my students are reluctant readers. They struggle with grade-level appropriate reading levels and some have developed a real distaste for reading in general. I think it is important to try and get my students to become engaged readers who want to access the material they are most interested in reading. Right now I have students accessing some of the on-line reading programs through the use of my phone. They were using an older computer in the classroom, but that computer recently died. With my youngest students I am using a "Hooked on Phonics" app to help reinforce sight words, blending, and word families, which are basic foundational skills that students need to master in order to read fluently. With an iPad in a classroom, and in the midst of a small group, I can have one student step aside and work on a Math game that focuses on a particular math skill in a real world connection like cutting a sandwich into thirds or fifths.

Donating to this project will improve my classroom environment, because it will give me a chance to work with individuals on a skill that they may need to spend more time on, or perhaps they need to see the standard in another way; through another medium.

I have really smart kids who just need to figure out how they learn. The iPad will help get them learning hard concepts, skills that may require them to think more abstractly, without the competitive time-constrained nature of the classroom.
