My students need a digital recorder and PA system to be able to hear what they sound like before performances and festivals. They also need 10 tuners to work on pitch.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

A chain reaction of support starts with one share.
Listening is a large part of music and music education. Students cannot hear how they sound as an ensemble from where they are standing or sitting when playing. They need a good recording device and PA system so they can hear and critique themselves.
My band students are very eager to learn more and perform better.
Many of them come from families who must borrow their instruments from the school district to participate in band. They struggle to afford even consumable items such as reeds, grease and oil for their students' instruments. Our school and band parents are very supportive of our band program and raise funds regularly to help these families.
My Project
We have been attending instrumental music festivals yearly in our area. One of the strategies that I would like to use is to play back to the students what they have performed, so they can critique themselves. By hearing what is needed to perform better, with correct balance and blend, students can make the adjustments they need to their playing.
It is very hard to hear what an audience hears from where you are sitting in the ensemble. Percussionists in the back of the ensemble cannot hear the volume that is heard from the podium. Students have to rely on my input to make these dynamic adjustments. I want the students to be able to play correctly, according to what THEY hear.
Students also need to be able to tune themselves, without the aid of a tuner. However, many students need the visual aid of a tuner to see how they need to correct their pitch.
My students will become better musicians by hearing what they sound like as an ensemble.
By using their listening skills to make corrections to their playing they will understand how their instrument relates to the rest of the band.
