My Students

My students are kind, funny, amazing young people who have the potential to learn and grow up successfully but lack the means necessary. They are hardworking and determined and just want to learn about the world they live in. Most of my students come from a high poverty neighborhood in the projects of NYC and receive free or reduced-price breakfast, lunch, and after school snacks. A lot of my students are English language learners who have moved to NYC from different countries where English is rarely spoken at home.

The children in my class inspire me to not only be a better teacher, but to be a better person every day.

Some of my students come from single parent households, live with many family members in small living conditions or live in a completely different state than their parents with a grandparent/grandparents or an alternative guardian. Overall, my students deal with hardships that no child should have to go through. They cannot afford the everyday materials that they need to be successful.

My Project

This year, my incredible 4th-grade students are going to help me start a Computer Science program at my school. I am SO excited to be kickstarting this program. This summer, I have gone to various professional development workshops to learn as much as I can about Computer Sciences and how to use it in the classroom in a meaningful way. Technology is the future, and we must educate our students at a young age how to navigate their way through. STEM will allow my students to think critically and start questioning things that do not make sense.

Integrating Computer Science into the classroom will enhance my student's creativity, problem-solving skills, abilities to work as a team, and much more!

For my students with learning challenges, Computer Science will give them the opportunity to express what they know in ways in which they feel successful. It will also give them visuals and immediate feedback on a daily basis.

Makey Makey are kits that allow students to find creative ways to interact with computers by using everyday objects instead of keyboards and mice. They can even use a banana as a space key! Code Monkey Island is a board game that gives students the opportunity to play around with basic programming concepts. It is important to incorporate "unplugged" computer science activities along with electronic resources. Robot Turtle is another unplugged game where students act as programmers and robots, using command cards to reach a specific goal. Finally, the drones will expose our students to programming physical objects to get from point A to point B.
