Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

The population of students in which I teach are challenged daily by poverty, drugs, gangs and violence. Despite their obstacles, my students are a source of great inspiration to me. Despite their obstacles, they teach me as much as I teach them. I teach art in a public high school in the Bronx that specializes in college prep. Our students want to go to college.

Art is a powerful vehicle for self expression and also a viable career choice for many creative teens. The fields of media design and technology are growing, and I would like to help keep my students abreast with current trends and innovations in design and technology. What better way to do this than to bring an Apple into the classroom? I would like to give students a voice that can reach a greater audience while also being able to teach students new and innovative ways to communicate through the use of various forms of media and technology.

A MacBook would be a perfect tool for the type of program I plan on creating. Through podcasts, film presentations, animation and other media programs, this could better prepare students for their futures in the 21st century and make them more desirable in the marketplace. Being technologically savvy is a must in today's' world, and it will give my students the extra edge needed to move them forward.

So many of my students are already at home using various forms of technology, and with the proper tools and guidance could really explore different ways to communicate. My hopes are to create a film and media club where students could share their voices, experiences and inspirations with their peers. This gift would make this dream real for my students whom so desperately need an outlet and vehicle to express these deep life experiences.
