Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

Hello everyone, I am a New York high school biology teacher. As with most city schools, our student population is extremely diverse: racially, economically and academically. My classes are generally composed of freshman and sophomore students, many of whom, when they first come to me, seem to have lost (or hidden) that childhood curiosity for the world around them that was, at one time, so insatiable. And by default, could not care less about science!! But with your help we can reverse these feelings!!

Biology and Marine Science are difficult subjects to teach to urban students who do not see the relevance of the topics in their lives. As the year progresses, there are many opportunities to be creative in the classroom, such as poster presentations on the different types of marine environments, the topology of the ocean floor, the cell as a city, or my personal favorite, most wanted posters for different human pathogens. Many of the students in our school are itching to be creative and the teachers in our department have found that class projects and presentations are the way to go. Working in groups to complete these activities, helps the students to build cooperation skills and with each project, the students become more comfortable speaking in front of a group. These projects seem to be the best way for us to get our students to be excited about coming to science class AND actually learn the material at the same time, while at the same time preparing them for college and eventually the workplace. PLEASE help us to keep this excitement alive in our class, into college, and beyond.

My favorite part of these projects, is that I get to teach the students what a well researched and constructed presentation looks like. And I am able to do this for students who may not be artistically gifted, thanks to the magic of technology! There is just not enough money in the budget for a color printer to be placed in every classroom, therefore what I am asking for is a color HP printer and replacement cartridges to ensure that all students can create the projects they can be proud of!

So I am asking for your help to create an educational environment that is similar to the kinds of workplaces my students will one day be joining! I am asking for your help to make coming to class and learning about science that much more interesting and meaningful! I am asking for your help to give my students the opportunity to express themselves through a more technological outlet!
