My Students

As a speech and language provider, I see children with various communication weaknesses such as: understanding information that is spoken to them, being able to write down their thoughts, answers or ideas in grammatically correct sentences while remaining on topic in correct sequence, being able to produce speech sound associated with each letter correctly, being able to encode and decode, understand the content of a passage and answer questions about it, understand how sounds are combined to formulate words, how words can be broken down into smaller sounds when trying to read unfamiliar words, being able to carry our multi-step directives.

We are a Title I school which means that the majority of students qualify for free lunch.

Many parents that work two jobs which means less overall communication among family members due to the decreased amount of time spent together. Several of my students do not have access to technology once they leave school. They have a true desire to express their thoughts, feelings, ideas, and answers and want therapy to be presented in a fun and creative ways. I love seeing students succeed. More success occurs when they remain interested and invested in the activity.

My Project

As a speech and language provider the needs of my students are diverse as I see children in grades k through 5. Teaching remotely puts such limitations on how I am able to offer my lessons. With 30 years under my belt I have plenty of teaching materials, especially documents that I would love to utilize, but can't while working remote. A document camera would allow me to present these materials while I work with my students. With the pen pad I would be able to edit, in real time, the written work my students submit electronically. My remote work space is not ideal. During therapy I face a wall full of windows. If I have the curtains open then there is terrible glare on the materials I am holding up to the webcam. If I keep the curtains closed to avoid the glare I am left in the dark, as there is no overhead lighting. The Lume cube would set the perfect lighting so my students can see me and the materials in the proper lighting. Lastly, it is extremely challenging to help my students improve their articulation when they can't hear my clear and precise production of any given sound. I only get 30 minutes with them; I want to make the most of it.
