My Students

I teach in a Philadelphia public school situated in the heart of the city. Our school serves about 600 neighborhood children from kindergarten through fourth grade. Ours is a Title I school where our children qualify for free breakfast and lunch. Many of our children have not been regularly exposed to reading experiences prior to school. Some have undergone trauma or have faced challenges in their lives which overshadow the focus on those skills required to set them up for academic success. This, coupled with the new challenges of remote learning have heightened the role of technology in academic achievement.

These unprecedented times have made me keenly aware of the efficiency with which each moment of virtual instruction must be delivered.

In this virtual learning world, much remains the same: we are teaching reading, math, science, social studies. However, there is a great deal of difference in the way in which we can present information and truly sustain focus. Herein lies the key. Virtual learning can be successful if we acknowledge the ways in which we must engage our students and capture their attention.

My Project

It seems the tools for teaching are changing. In my virtual class, I am constantly learning and employing new tools to see what will most efficiently stimulate our children to tune in and to stay engaged. Recently, we've discovered the magic of an iPad which will be utilized to strengthen our lesson activities.

Our new iPad is going to change the game for us and this iPad pen will complete our new setup.

Protecting the iPad for prolonged use when we move into hybrid scheduling will keep us at the ready to best integrate these tools into our day to day activities.
