Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I have been teaching for seventeen years, and yet--even with all the momentous changes ahead--I still feel as fresh and hopeful about my work as the day I began. At scant moments when my resolve falters, within seconds a flood of images, sounds, and smiles spill forth to remind me of just how privileged I am to do this work.

This work--at moments both big and small--is all about the kids.

As such, as I move about in the world, I am always thinking of the work and the kids--3rd graders are so curious, and so ready to demystify what can seem oblique and impenetrable. In this year's virtual classroom, we will move from abstract ideas to concrete models and solutions, and I will strive to make content and concepts as dynamic and real-world friendly as possible. This is rich and layered work, and the kids respond in kind. I love what we do, and the only real downside is there is never enough time in the short, short year to get it all in.

My Project

More than anything, I wish we were ready to return to in-person learning. But that is not yet possible, and as such, I want to make our time with remote learning as rich, satisfying and meaningful as possible. With equipment like a wireless keyboard, laptop stand and document camera, I'll be able to maximize the tech I already have at home, while tools like a microphone, headphones, and a ring light will help the kids hear and see what I'm teaching with clarity. For example, with a document camera I will be able to bring lessons to life with counting exercises, observations of real objects, and more--which will make lessons more interactive, and far more meaningful. We're all in such uncharted territory, but I think with tools such as the ones requested here, we'll be about to chart a course and stay focused on our main goals---namely, to ground our daily interactions in clear and barrier-free exchanges, and to make our time together as soul-filling and mind-expanding as possible.
