My Students

My middle school students are bright, funny, and engaging, and they love their library! They come from a Los Angeles neighborhood where many struggle with poverty, language barriers, and the realities of modern urban life.

Our library program is committed to educating all students with a focus on teaching twenty-first century skills, encouraging personal growth, promoting lifelong learning, and honoring diversity.

Our school’s enrollment is approximately 1,600 students, and the library serves the entire school population. All of the students at our school receive federal breakfast and lunch programs. In addition, approximately 26% of the students are English language learners. There is a group foster home right across the street from our school, so a number of our students are foster youth. Approximately 15% of our students have special needs, as we have a variety of great Special Education programs at our school. Our school's ethnic makeup reflects the diversity of the surrounding community: Latino, African American, Asian, and Caucasian.

My Project

The computers in our library are 13 years old and are in desperate need of replacement. Unfortunately, our school's budget cannot cover the cost of new computers. Trying to use an unreliable computer to locate information is incredibly frustrating for my students, and often they will give up their quest, not due to lack of motivation, but due to sheer exasperation!

It pains me to see my students give up on seeking information, and I would like to provide them with an easy to use iPad so that they can access our digital research library and catalog.

An iPad will help us to fulfill our 21st century library learning goals for all of our students. These include learning collaboratively by engaging in cooperative learning methods in an open and creative library space.

They can access information in a variety of formats, including digital formats and evaluate information for accuracy, authenticity, and usefulness while demonstrating critical thinking skills. Ultimately they can convey learning by communicating in oral, written, and/or artistic formats, with a special emphasis on creativity.

Using the iPad they can choose books to read for pleasure by honing self-knowledge skills. Lastly, they can employ problem-solving skills in the research process.

Your generous donation will help put my students on the path to learning new skills that are essential to their futures. In addition, you will help bring joy, excitement, and gratitude to the hearts and minds of middle school students!
