My Students

"Technology can become the "wings" that will allow the educational world to fly farther and faster than ever before-if we allow it." -Jenny Arledge Our students have the wings but are unable to expand their ways of thinking and exploring. Technology the pencil and paper of our time.

I am currently teaching 23 special education students from grades K-8th in a title 1 school.

Our school is located in a low social economic neighborhood in Brownsville, Brooklyn. Most of my school population live in public housing from single family homes. Statistics for this area reveal low graduation rates. My students are receiving SETSS (special education teacher support services) and require additional remedial services in ELA and Math because of their learning disabilities. Most of them present with poor long and short term auditory memory skills. They are performing 2-3 grade levels below their chronological age which results in low tolerance, high frustration level and a poor self-esteem. They find it difficult, if not impossible to stay on task for extended periods of time. They also have difficulty following multi-step directions or remembering directions.

My Project

The interactive whiteboard can accommodate different learning styles. Tactile learners can use the screen and learn by touching and marking on the board. Auditory learners can have discussions and visual learners can observe the teaching on the board. Kinestetic learners have the opportunity to partticipate in interactive activities. Students can become more active learners by participating in their own learning. Instruction and information in both written and verbal formats and they are able to respond directly on the board. They also need software in the areas of Math and ELA that can be easily integrated to support their challenges. The software allows me to create engaging interactive learning experiences while providing the flexibility to respond to the needs of my students in real-time.

It is vitally necessary that learning disabled children utilize as many of their sensory modalities as possible.

My students have varying abilities in which they can work together on a specific project or toward a common goal. This project will create an atmosphere in which a true community of learners is facilitated and enhanced. This will help our students receive a multisensory approach to learning. This will also give them the opportunity to use technology that is not present in many of their homes. My students will have the advantage to use all their senses to enjoy, appreciate and learn.
