Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students are young learners (3 to 4 years old) who are either on the autism spectrum or present with speech and language delays. My students are all wonderful, and they are all unique, but they are atypical learners who require a great amount of adult support throughout the day.

My students are very active and inquisitive.

Several are in a school environment for the first time, and they are learning to use language, increase self-help skills, and interact with same-age peers. Many of my students have some form of expressive language such as vocally imitating modeled words. All of my students are awesome, and they have all acquired new skills since entering our classroom.

My Project

During these challenging times, technology has become much more important in instructing all students. Over the past several months, I have lent several of my classroom iPads to my students so they can learn at home. I may not recover some of these iPads as some students will continue to learn remotely and others will return to the classroom in the near future. I assure you that these new iPads will remain in my classroom as all of my students now have the necessary technology and support to learn remotely.

Technology can be used to instruct students in all developmental domains, including: academic, speech & language and social skills.

There are a wide variety of apps that help teach skills such as self-help skills and communication skills such as requesting. iPads are ideal for teaching early learners these skills as they are much easier to use than a mouse and keyboard (I find most early learners have emergent fine-motor skills and often require support to use a computer).
