Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

The Title 1 school were I work has had my heart for over 20 years. The first graders that I teach thrive when things they deem monotonous and routine are presented in new ways. For the past few years, I have noticed a decline in my students wanting to read for enjoyment let alone for practice. They would much rather interact with a device than a book.

I have decided to team up with technology instead of push back against it.

With your help, my students will receive a class set of headsets with built in microphones. With these tools, the class will record themselves on their device reading a "just right" book and experience the thrill of seeing and hearing themselves on the playback. It will not only excite them to experience reading in a different way, but they can also track how their fluency, expression, and word rate increases each time they read. The headsets will also help to cancel out the distraction of 27 beginning readers reading aloud.
