My Students

My Kindergarten class is in a low-income/high poverty area. Many of the students come in with little to no school experience and teaching them to begin reading is one of the most rewarding experiences. Often by the end of the year they are trying to read everything in their sight! The school is a neighborhood school that serves students Pre-k through 6th grade. Many students are raised by single parents and/or grandparents; however, our staff makes the school a welcoming and safe place to help students overcome adversity.

My Project

Interactive building sets open an entire world of social communication and team work, in addition to building both fine and gross motor skills. The majority of my students enter kindergarten eager to learn social skills such as taking turns in a game, talking through and reasoning to solve problems, and working together to build a project.

All of the materials in this project will allow students to develop social skills without even realizing it!

For example, the marble run set challenges students to build a marble run together. They will have to put their minds together to figure out how to build a working marble run. This will include reasoning about which way the pieces need to face in order for the run to work. The K'Nex and Magnatiles allow the students to build their own ideas and then interact in pretend play with one another.

I am so excited to offer my students the opportunity to learn social skills such as reasoning and problem solving through these interactive activities. They are always excited to work together and these activities give them both a direction towards a goal and challenge them to use their social and fine motor skills.
