My students walk into the building every morning knowing that they are in a safe heaven. A place where they will be well taken care of, fed, and nourished mind, body, and soul by the dedicated teachers and staff that work here. Most of my students come from severely impoverished households within the lower Kensington area that is saturated with issues of substance abuse and violence. When a student is asked why they don't have the basic necessary supplies (pencils, paper, seasonally appropriate attire), I have been honestly told on multiple occasions, "My mom had to buy us food."
I cannot imagine waking up and going to school as carefree as most of these children do knowing the challenges that await at home.
However, I do understand that these students get up and come to school smiling because the school provides them with hope. We enrich their minds with literature, math, arts, and sciences. With what little resources we find, we manage to give them the power to dream big. By providing them with every tool possible, we enable those dreams to come true even in the face of great challenge.
The simple materials I am requesting may seem a little out of the ordinary for a classroom, but I love to make my classrooms extraordinary! My class will have a six drawer organization bin at each group of six students in order to help them to keep their notebooks, folders, and small group supplies organized. It also helps to enforce team work because by having everything in a designated spots, group leaders can easily gather supplies and efficiently distribute what's needed without having to worry about anything that has been misplaced.
I first started to implement this method because my students always misplace their notebooks and folders and wasted valuable learning time looking for where it could have possibly gone.
I started out by making my own bins using free UPS boxes. They did the job, but were not sturdy enough and often collapsed making all of the supplies fall onto the floor numerous times. I would love to help teach students a valuable life skill of organization, which will also help them to succeed throughout the year by having all supplies handy and available at all times!
