My Students

We are a Title I school. We are located in an urban community in Brooklyn, New York. The are is a melting pot of ethnicities, cultures and backgrounds. Many of the residents are West Indian, Jamaican, Trinidadian, African-American, and Guyanese. Also, we are surrounded around many industries as cement factories, automotive body shops, and storage facilities. At our school, visual arts, performing arts, and physical education are infused into the core curriculum. From grades K-5, every student receives instruction in physical education, dance, music, drama, and the visual arts. In addition, we are the first charter school in New York state to achieve 'Lighthouse' status following the The Leader in Me: The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People and have achieved International Baccalaureate status for primary education.

I encourage my scholars to establish big goals and strive for excellence.

They are learning because of the nurturing and support they receive. Some scholars are visual learners, others are kinesthetic, and we have a population of those with special needs. All are bright and inquisitive. No matter the challenges, they are excelling. It is because of my students, I excitedly look forward to the classroom providing them with skills needed.

My Project

Our school is committed to building personal character within our students. An important component of that is through physical education. Why? Organized sports creates a win-win setting for all. Basketball and soccer are two important structured sports taught at our school. They encourage discipline within oneself and the importance of working with others. Integrated into the core curriculum, they develop learning strategies, synergize, reinforce teamwork, along with building ones personal character.

Integrating math and science with team sports, our students learn about time, distance, coordination and creativity.

Some examples include determining the force of energy needed to get the ball through the net. Using critical thinking to distract or block the opposing player. Students learn how to creatively move the ball down the field using only their feet. They determine distance, gauging through a mental lens to get the soccer ball into the net. There are definitely other factors we can include, yet, the most important is that the students are engaged, learning and having fun.
