My Project

Students love the opportunity to play games in the classroom. By playing a board game like Risk, students will get to practice how imperialism and the drive to control new lands played a part in build up to World War I. While we talk about the causes and examples in class such as the scramble for Africa, fun competition tied in with writing prompts and guided questions will really make the information stick.

My goal is for students to embrace the concepts of imperialism and be able to critically weight the pros and cons of it.

Every year we get to our World War I unit in the spring when state testing begins. My kids LOVE anything to do with the World Wars, but the testing drains them. I also know they love any kind of game. By combining the two during the long test periods, I believe they will come away with the important information better than a normal lesson.

Students at my school are curious about the world and hungry for knowledge. We are in a small community and that comes with some amazing benefits. The students truly care for each other and what goes on in our town. Many of them have to help their families on the farm or with childcare and are wise beyond their years. They just might not know it yet!
