Help Ms. D.

Currently, I teach a middle school special day class for 6th, 7th, and 8th graders in San Francisco, California. Special day classes are classes designed to meet the educational needs of students with disabilities. My classroom serves students with mild to moderate learning disabilities. Their disabilities prohibit them from participating in the general education curriculum My students are diagnosed with a range of disabilities, however, they all benefit from the small, structured learning environment that my classroom provides. Many of my students read well below their grade level. Therefore, my lessons and units must find alternative ways to introduce grade level content to my students. Current legislation mandates that all students have access to grade level content. Achievement levels for students with special needs are well below those of their peers. Educators need effective instructional techniques to boost the achievement levels for students with disabilities. I teach math and social studies. While these subjects are very different in content, they both have countless ways of creatively presenting information. Many of these ways involve creating PowerPoint presentations and other computer animations to captivate and engage students more effectively. Additionally, for students with disabilities, this type of instruction gives access to content that is not accessible in traditional textbooks. The addition of an LCD projector in my classroom would greatly enhance my ability to teach and my students' ability to learn. My students desperately want to learn grade level content. While their learning disabilities make this plight more difficult, creative teaching instruction results in higher achievement. Please help me by contributing towards making my classroom a more effective learning environment. Technology can greatly increase the effectiveness of teaching techniques and raise students' achievement levels. Unfortunately, urban public schools do not have the resources to provide their students with access to technology. You can help to boost the achievement levels of students with special needs by giving them access to alternative ways of receiving instruction.
